Aimee is the UK Government’s Chief Data Officer, responsible for implementing the Government-wide Data Strategy, fostering a data-driven culture, strengthening governance, and collaborating with senior stakeholders to ensure coherent, secure, and responsible use of data across government to drive effective and ethical digital services for the Public.
Aimee Smith began her career with the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) in 2001 as an Intelligence Analyst. By 2014, she was leading the UK’s largest Confidential Intelligence Unit, overseeing the collection and dissemination of covert intelligence for major investigations. Aimee recognised the criticality of data to effective operational decision-making and led to her driving a data transformation programme to establish the first Data Office in UK law enforcement.
She also played a pivotal role in creating and chairing the NPCC National Data & Analytics Board across the whole law enforcement sector and spearheaded the position on changes to Data Legislation and future Data Reform.
A passionate advocate for treating data as a strategic asset, Aimee emphasises investment in skilled Data Professionals to enhance accountability, transform digital public services pan-Government, and deliver better outcomes for citizens. Aimee champions improving data quality, proportionality, and accessibility, while promoting transparency and public trust.
