Ben Russell is a Deputy Assistant Commissioner in the Metropolitan Police. He is the Director of Intelligence & Covert Policing, lead for the VAWG100 project and is also responsible for Custody and Criminal Justice in the Met. The VAWG 100 is the Met’s initiative to use data and insights to identify and prioritise action against the most harmful VAWG offenders in London.
Ben transferred to the Met in 2022, as the UK’s first Chief Officer to join directly from outside Policing. He spent 12 years at the National Crime Agency, including as Deputy Director of the National Economic Crime Centre, leading the UK’s fight against fraud, money laundering and bribery & corruption. Prior to this role Ben was a founding member of the NCA’s National Cyber Crime Unit, including as Head of Cyber Intelligence, leading teams of officers, analysts and technical staff across the UK and overseas.
Before the NCA Ben worked at the Serious Organised Crime Agency and Child Exploitation Online Protection Centre and, after graduating from the University of Cambridge, was Managing Director of a youth leadership charity.
